Zimbabwe orders striking doctors to report for work on Monday or else

The Zimbabwe government today said all striking doctors should report for work on Monday at 8 am failing which they will face disciplinary action as this will be a breach of their contracts.

Doctors and other health workers were offered a 60 percent increment yesterday but they rejected it.

Health Minister Obediah Moyo said the government was appalled that doctors walked out from the negotiating table yet the government had shown its sincerity by continuously engaging with health workers to address their challenges including implementing programmes to ensure they have the needed medicines and equipment to deliver medical care.

“Their remuneration packages have been reviewed consistently in the context of the prevailing economic climate,” he said.

He said the 60 percent salary increase was an improvement for the previous 30 percent increase.

Besides that:

  • Locum rates for nurses and paramedics were reviewed from $4 to $16 per day hour
  • And from $6 to $24 per night hour
  • Locum rates for doctors were reviewed from $7 to $28 per day hour
  • And from $10 to $40 per night hour
  • Initial uniform grant was reviewed from $75 to $300
  • Uniform maintenance allowance was reviewed from $75 to $300
  • Psychiatric allowance was reviewed from $20 to $100 per month
  • Out of residence allowance was reviewed from $250 to $500 per month
  • Post basic allowance was reviewed from $70 to $150 a month
