Zimbabwe now a must visit country again says top US financial newspaper

Zimbabwe has once again become a must visit safari country according to an article by the Wall Street Journal, one of the leading financial papers in the United States.

The paper said this week that tourism was on the rebound especially following the departure of former President Robert Mugabe who resigned in November 2017 following military intervention and was replaced by one of his deputies Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa, whose mantra was “Zimbabwe is open for business”, was elected in his own capacity in July 2018 but his main rival Movement for Democratic Change leader Nelson Chamisa rejected the result but lost the case at the Constitutional Court.

The country has, however, been experiencing serious economic problems which escalated when it abandoned the multiple currency regime which had been operating for a decade to reintroduce its own currency which it said should be the sole currency for trading locally.

The author, Anton Crone, who left the Zimbabwe soon after independence in 1980 but says he still considers it home, says tourism saw a resurgence toward the end of Mugabe’s regime, in part because of his unlikely term as a leader of the United Nations World Tourism Organization between 2013 and 2015.

“As such, Zimbabwe’s most popular safari destinations remain safe havens while the rest of the nation continues to lick its socio-economic wounds,” he writes.

Zimbabwe’s main attraction is its big game the guides.

“Travel companies have been operating throughout Zimbabwe’s political and economic upheavals. They’re not new to challenging conditions,” he quote travel operator Shelley Cox as saying.

Besides the big game and the Victoria Falls, Crone says Zimbabwe has 690 bird species, 450 of them in Victoria Falls alone.

Zimbabwe has of late hosted several celebrities including Steve Harvey, Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and Grace Byers.
