Zimbabwe missing doctor found

The acting president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association Peter Magombeyi who disappeared on Saturday evening, causing a stir locally, regionally and internationally, was found alive in Nyabira, 34 km from Harare, last night.

Police confirmed that they found Magombeyi but said they were still investigating what had transpired.

There was outrage over his disappearance which coincided with the opening this week of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the visit of the UN rapporteur to Zimbabwe.

The government and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front have argued that the government cannot be involved in the abductions as this tarnishes the image of the government and have said a third force is involved.

They also queried why the abductions coincided with regional and international events.

ZANU-PF youth leader Pupurai Togarepi said the opposition Movement for Democratic Change was involved as it benefitted politically from the disappearances.

Several civil organisations and hospital doctors blamed the government for the abduction of Magombeyi and ordered the government to release him.

Magombeyi has since rejoined his family.

Below is Magombeyi’s interview with Voice of America.
