Zimbabwe kicks off 2021with 6 coronavirus deaths

Zimbabwe today kicked off the year 2021 with six coronavirus deaths -two in Bulawayo and one each in Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland Central and Masvingo.

The death toll to date is now 369.

Mashonaland Central has the second lowest deaths at 6. Matebeleland North, which recorded the first coronavirus case in the country, only has 3 deaths up to now.

There were 217 new cases with the highest number being recorded in Mashonaland Central which had 77. Cases to date have risen to 14 084.

Some 97people recovered, 45 of them from Matebeleland North. Total recoveries now stand at 11 347.

The number of active cases today rose to 2 368 with 549 being in Harare, 450 in Matebeleland South and 348 in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe has postponed the opening of schools indefinitely because of the surge in the number of coronavirus cases.

Examinations, however, resume on Tuesday, 5 January.

There are now 84.1 million cases across the globe with 1.83 million deaths, 59.5 million recoveries and 22.8 million active cases.

South Africa, which has the highest number of cases in Africa, now has 1.06 million cases, 28 469 deaths and 149 021 active cases.
