Zimbabwe January tobacco exports up 300 percent

Tobacco exports for January have risen by more than 300 percent year on year to 23.6 million kilogrammes, earning $181.7 million, the latest  Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB)  report has shown.

Last year, 5.5 million  kilogrammes were sold for $23.2 million.

China snapped up 19.1 million kilogrammes of the leaf at an average price of $8. 72 per kilogramme for a total of $166.5 million, while South Africa bought over 1 million kilograms at an average price of $3.21 per kilogramme for $3.3 million.

Russia bought 667kg at just $1.39 per kg worth $929 000.

TIMB said in its weekly report that more farmers had registered to grow the crop this year.

“A total of 88 640 growers have registered for the 2015 season up from 87 281 that registered in 2014.”

While it had registered 16 540 new farmers, about 26 375 farmers who sold their crop last year had not yet registered, it added.- The Source
