Zimbabwe increases maize producer price to $1400 a tonne

Zimbabwe today increased the producer price of maize from RTGS$726 to RTGS$1 400 but said millers and retailers should not increase the price of mealie meal because the Grain Marketing Board is not increasing its selling price to millers.

The price has in reality dropped from US$360 last season to US$242 a tonne but farmers will be paid in local currency at the prevailing interbank rate.

Zimbabwe had a bad season this year and is expecting to import about 700 000 tonnes of maize.

Tanzania has promised to supply the maize.
