Health professionals have frequently gone on strike in recent years over a number of issues, in particular low pay.
But speaking at State House where several private and state-owned companies were donating money and consumables towards the national Covid-19 response, Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo said health workers will now offer uninterrupted service.
“We would like to assure you that we have committed ourselves to be in full support of government efforts. As health workers we are going to be together in this fight,” he said.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who received the donations, said he deeply appreciated the pledge and commitment of the health workers.
“I am happy that you do not have strike sentiments and you are willing to join the rest of the country to keep at bay this pandemic.
“We will do our best to ensure that as frontline fighters, you are supported with all personal protective clothing you require,” he said.
He added: “We are going to do our best and the entire country has come to assist in mobilising”.
Mnangagwa commended the private companies and individuals for donating towards the national Covid-19 response.
“Thank you very much Zimbabweans for coming in solidarity to fight this pandemic without borders. Let me assure the nation that your donations will be put to maximum use transparently and with accountability,” he said.
The donors included Telone, Netone, Green Fuel, Turnall Holdings, Dairiboard Zimbabwe Limited, Angel of Hope and Blue Ribbon Foods.
The companies donated personal protective equipment, ventilators, hand sanitizers and roofing material for the setting up of Covid-19 isolation facilities.-New Ziana
