Coronavirus deaths from March to end of December were only 363.
Manicaland, where Provincial Affairs Minister Ellen Gwaradzimba succumbed to the virus, had the highest number of deaths today with 10 followed by Harare with 8 and Bulawayo 6.
There were 741 new cases and 700 recoveries.
The number of cases this month has risen to 12 242 with the total so far at 26 109.
Here were only 13 867 cases from March to December last year.
Some 15 414 people have recovered but there are still 10 029 active cases.
Harare has 4 451 active cases. It had 263 new cases today, 299 recoveries and eight deaths.
Manicaland had 10 deaths, 67 new cases, 29 recoveries and now has 1 149 active cases.
Mashonaland East has 1 060 active cases. It had 74 new cases and two deaths, no recoveries.
The number of active cases in Bulawayo increased slightly to 669 today after it recorded 59 new cases, 39 recoveries and six deaths.
Acting President Constantino Chiwenga who is also Health Minister said Zimbabwe might not need to extend the current level 4 lockdown if people do not become reckless.
Police said they arrested 2 936 people yesterday for violating lockdown measures – 958 for not wearing masks and 1 569 for “unnecessary movements”.
They said 331 012 have been arrested for violating lockdown measures since March last year.
Globally the number of cases rose to 94 million. Deaths are now 2.01 million with 67.2 million recoveries and 24.8 million active cases.
The United States, which has the highest number of cases in the world could surpass 24 million cases and 400 000 deaths by tomorrow morning.
Cases in South Africa also continue to increase. It now has 1.31 million cases, 36 467 deaths and 212 529 active cases.
The entire African continent has only 3.2 million cases .Only 77 586 people have died and there are 511 322 active cases.
