Zimbabwe coronavirus cases surpass 2 000

Zimbabwe today recorded 214 coronavirus cases, 90 of which were local transmissions, raising the cumulative figure to 2 034.

Local transmissions stand at 1 046 while imported ones are 988.

There were 22 recoveries bringing the total to 510.

The country still has 1 498 cases and has tested 107 788 people.

Zimbabwe is in the top 20 among African countries that have tested more people in their countries in terms of those tested against the country’s population.

The country has introduced tighter lockdown measures to curb the spread of the disease but today in the central business district of Bulawayo, which has the highest number of local transmissions, things were almost normal.

There was no sign at all that the lockdown had been tightened.

There are now 15.2 million cases globally.

These include 622 500 deaths, 9.2 million recoveries and 5.4 million active cases.
