Zimbabwe coronavirus cases continue to drop with lockdown due for review in eight days

The number of active coronavirus cases in Zimbabwe today dropped to 2 235 after four people died and 29 recovered while there were only 28 new cases.

Deaths have now risen 1 436, cases to 35 796 and recoveries to 32 123.

Zimbabwe extended its Level 4 lockdown by two weeks last Monday and is due to roll-out its nationwide vaccination programme tomorrow. It kicked off in Harare on Thursday.

Information Secretary Nick Mangwana said more than 8 000 health workers in Bulawayo have registered to be vaccinated from tomorrow.

Zimbabwe received 200 000 doses of vaccine from Sinopharm on Monday and is due to receive another 600 000 doses.

The number of active cases is also dropping globally and now stands at 22.2 million. There are now 111.8 million cases, 2.48 million deaths and 87.1 million recoveries.

In neighbouring South Africa the number of active cases has dropped to 43 874. The country has recorded 1.5 million cases, including 48 940 deaths.
