Zimbabwe cabinet meets at State House to comply with coronavirus requirements on social distancing

Zimbabwe’s cabinet today held its weekly meeting at State House instead of the usual Munhumutapa cabinet room as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus, Presidential spokesman George Charamba said.

He said this was social distancing at work which required ministers to sit at least a metre apart. They also held the meeting in a well ventilated tent.

Charamba said the move was meant to encourage local companies and businesses to adopt innovative ways to continue with their work while observing recommendations to keep their employees safe.

“Cabinet continues to show the way until the pandemic is defeated,” he said.

Zimbabwe has so far confirmed two cases of coronavirus. One of the patients, Zororo Makama, died yesterday and was buried today.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today set up an 11 member Inter- Ministerial Task Force chaired by Health and Child Care Minister Obadiah Moyo to manage the country’s response to the pandemic.

Obadiah Moyo is deputised by Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo.

Other members are Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri, Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo, Home Affairs Minister  Kazembe Kazembe, Primary Education Minister  Cain Mathema , Transport Minister Biggie Matiza, Tourism Minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, and Higher Education Minister Amon Murwira.

The taskforce will monitor the situation and manage the response to the coronavirus outbreak and identify any gaps for corrective action. It will also raise resources to adequately respond to the outbreak. –New Ziana/Own
