ZBC demands $58 million from Cuthbert Dube and five former managers

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation and the Ministry of Information have filed a lawsuit demanding US$58 million from former ZBC board chairman Cuthbert Dube and five top managers of the corporation. The managers are Happison Muchechetere who was the chief executive officer; Tazzen Mandizvidza who was in charge of news and current affairs; Elliot Kasu, general manager of finance; Allan Chiweshe, radio services; and Ralph Nyambudzi, head of finance. The six are alleged to have enriched themselves by awarding themselves hefty salaries and loans at the expenses of the corporation. The managers are reported to have failed to remit US$28 million to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and fraudulently took US$23 million from the company. The ZBC scandal was unearthed in 2013 when it was discovered that Muchechetere was earning close of US$40 000 a month when the corporation was unable to pay its workers. The government commissioned an audit into the ZBC operations but its results have not yet been disclosed.  Acting board chairman Gibson Munyoro was last week summoned by the Parliamentary committee on Information to produce the audit report but he argued that he could not do so as he did not have such a mandate. He said only the Minister of Information could table the report in Parliament.
