ZANU-PF women’s deputy leader says demonstrations against her are a non-event

The deputy leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Women’s League Eunice Sandi-Moyo today said demonstrations against her yesterday are a non-event.

She is only going to respond if she is approached officially by the party.

Scores of ZANU-PF league members demonstrated yesterday calling for her ouster claiming that she was setting up parallel structures to oust league leader Grace Mugabe, who is the country’s First Lady.

Placard carrying members accused Sandi-Moyo, who is the provincial Affairs Minister for Bulawayo, of various things including being “the mother of tribalisim”(sic).

“It is clear Sandi-Moyo wants to take over leadership of the Women’s League as she is creating parallel structures,” one of the demonstrators said yesterday.

Sandi-Moyo poses a direct threat to the First Lady’s political ambitions especially calls by the Women’s League to have a woman in the presidency.

When this move was mooted in 2015 as a way to get rid of Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whispers say the Women’s League backed down when they leant that those loyal to Mnangagwa were going to nominate Sandi-Moyo as their candidate which would have displaced Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko instead.
