ZANU-PF Harare youth leader in suicide attempt

Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Harare Province youth leader Godwin Gomwe tried to commit suicide when he learnt that police were looking for him in connection with a case in which he is alleged to have extorted money from eight Glen Norah housing cooperatives using the name of the First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Gomwe appeared in court yesterday with six others accused of extorting about $46 000 from the housing cooperatives.

According to The Herald State prosecutor Michael Reza today opposed the granting of bail to Gomwe because he was suicidal. It was therefore necessary to protect him by keeping him behind bars.

Reza said Gomwe attempted to shoot himself before he was disarmed by an army officer in Makuti when he learnt that police were after him. After being disarmed he was later found with rat poison, it is alleged.

Gomwe is facing extortion charges together with Muchineripi Mupindu, alias Ginya, Fidelis Ndaradza, alias Brigadier, Haruwandi Munyawiri, alias Baya, Hamphrey Madenyika, Josephine Hadziindi  and Norah Toronga.
