Will today be D-day for Kasukuwere or just another dud?

The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front’s politburo’s meeting today has been hyped amid speculation that it will discuss the fate of embattled national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere, but this could just be another dud as Kasukuwere’s case has dominated news for more than a month.

Party provinces expressed a vote of no confidence in Kasukuwere more than a month ago but no action has been taken as yet. One [province, Bulawayo, has since backed out.

Kasukuwere is being accused of setting up parallel structures to oust President Robert Mugabe but he has denied this saying those calling for him to go are actually saying Mugabe should go.

Mugabe is reported to have asked his lieutenants to spare Kasukuwere fearing that this could derail the party ahead of next year’s elections.

Mugabe is, however, reported to have given in to demands by war veterans that the party’s political commissar should be someone with liberation war credentials and is likely to demote Kasukuwere to a junior post.

Though the date for elections has not been decided yet, Mugabe has already started his campaign for 2018 and will be holding a youth rally in Mutare on Friday to coincide with youth day.

Mugabe is facing a fractured opposition which is negotiating a coalition which it says must be functional by end of August.
