What did Trump really mean when he said: “We are looking at Zimbabwe right now”?

United States President Donald Trump’s statement that he is looking at Zimbabwe right now has left a lot of baffled but Harare has not reacted to the statement yet.

Trump made the remark on Friday during a question and answer with journalists.

The relevant conversation went as follows:

Question: Mr. President, a follow-up.  Your initiative called “Prosper Africa” was launched.  And I have the opportunity to speak to with many African leaders.

Trump: Good.

Question:  They say that’s a good opportunity for African countries to engage more —

Trump:  Right.

Question: –and work with the United States.  But the President of Zimbabwe, he said that because of the sanctions that U.S. imposed on Zimbabwe, they cannot — it will be hard for them to work for you guys.

Trump:  We’re looking at Zimbabwe right now.  Go ahead.

And that was it.

Trump renewed sanctions on Zimbabwe for another year in March despite appeals by the Zimbabwean government and economists who argue that the sanctions are hurting ordinary people more than the intended politicians.
