What a mockery?

Zimbabwe’s ageing opposition political leaders must really think the country is full of a bunch of people that do not think. Rev. Ndabaningi Sithole, a senior and one of the country’s elder statesmen, is apparently still nursing hopes that one day he can lead this country.

What else are people expected to think when he suddenly fires all senior members of his party because they were determined to organise against the party so that they could achieve their hidden agendas.

Sithole fired the only party MPs, after his own suspension, Fred Sithole who is also the party’s director for elections together with national chairman Dumisani Sibambo, secretary-general, Edwin Nguwa, treasurer, Cynthia Sigauke, secretary for research Patrick Gatsheni- Ndlovu, and secretary for women’s affairs Mahere-Katso.

Their crime was that of holding illegal meetings which had nothing to do with party business. The officials were allegedly not consulting with party leaders before carrying out most decisions which needed authorisation from Sithole.

“I have, as president/founder of ZANU, decided to fully exercise my emergency powers as conferred on me by the constitution of the Zimbabwe African National Union,” Sithole was quoted as saying.

Apparently the reason why the members were fired seems to be centred more on the fact that Sithole is the founder of the party and it appears he can do as he pleases because he is the party.

Whispers say the fired members were in fact trying to figure out ways of revamping the party because the old man is now useless. But instead of retiring in dignity, Sithole decided to fire the whole lot.

So much for democracy in the opposition parties that are accusing President Mugabe of being undemocratic and of staying in power too long
