A report which claims that diamonds worth more than US$2 billion have been stolen from Marange since 2008, says former army commander Solomon Mujuru who died in a fire in August last year was assassinated by unknown persons.
The report released last week to coincide with an international diamond conference at Victoria Falls says at the time of his death Mujuru was in a bitter dispute with Adel Abdul Rahman al Aujan. a Saudi billionaire with whom he co-owned River Ranch diamond mine near Beitbridge.
Mujuru died in a fire on the night of 15-16 August last year.
An inquest into his death in which magistrate Walter Chikwanha heard evidence from nearly 40 witnesses ruled that there was no foul play.
Mujuru had also reportedly sold his stake in River Ranch to Harare lawyer Addington Chinake.
The report, Reap what you sow; by a Canadian non-governmental organisation Partnership Africa Canada also described Mujuru as heir apparent to President Robert Mugabe.
It said that the theft of Marange diamonds was perhaps the biggest single plunder of diamonds the world has seen since Cecil Rhodes.
