VP’s house $1m up

The cost of the house being constructed for the vice-President in Harare is reported to have gone up by $1 million from last year’s estimates $3 million to $4 million according to the latest government estimates.

The house is one of the projects classified as being in progress under the Ministry of Public Construction and National Housing budget. Ongoing projects will account for $427.6 million while new projects are estimated to cost only $66.4 million.

Apart from air defence projects which will account for $16.5 million most of the new projects are below $1 million. Those for $1 million and above include air conditioning at the Harare Posts and Telecommunications Training Centre, renovations to the New York Embassy, national residential accommodation for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the police transport network in Harare, Nkulumane and Warren Park police stations, Kadoma and Khami prisons, office accommodation and depots stores, and civil service housing.

There is, however, a special note that although the construction programme is based on an overall assessment of priorities, circumstances might arise which might require some of the items to be abandoned. There might also be delays in implementation which could result in the planned expenditure not being achieved.

In the event of underspending, the treasury may authorise other high priority items for the following ear to be introduced in the current financial year.
