US tops 2 million coronavirus cases

The death of George Floyd on 25 May, ironically Africa Day, has grossly overshadowed one of the United States’ biggest killers at the moment, the coronavirus.

The US now has two million cases out of the global total of 7.1 million and has just over 112 400 deaths out of the global total of 406 350.

The second highest ranking country, Brazil, has about 692 000 cases, 37 300 deaths and 352 500 active cases.

While globally the number of active cases in now less than that of closed cases- that is those who have died plus those who have recovered- the US has not yet reached that curve.

It still has more than 1.1 million active cases.

The US had 1.7 million cases when Floyd was killed. Just over 99 200 had died from the virus.

To its credit, the US has so far tested 21.3 million people.
