Those who died were Paul Rukanda who was Tsvangirai-Java’s campaign manager and Tafadzwa Mhundwa, her late mother’s cousin.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa paid his condolences to the two activists who were killed in the accident and wished Vimbai a speedy recovery.
“Very sorry to hear of the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of two committed MDC activists and injured Vimbai Tsvangirai,” he tweeted.
“My thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased, and I join the Tsvangirai family and the nation as a whole in praying for Vimbai’s speedy recovery.”
Tsvangirai-Java was travelling from Bulawayo where the party had just had held a meeting.
MDC candidates are currently campaigning for positions in the party leadership ahead of the congress to be held next week.
Party leader Nelson Chamisa is unopposed but other posts such as vice-president, national chairman, treasurer and secretary general will be contested, some heavily.
The High Court last week said Chamisa’s leadership was unconstitutional and ordered an extraordinary congress within a month but Chamisa’s party is contesting the judgment and said its congress will go ahead from 24-26 May as scheduled.
