Sithembiso Nyoni made her name as the founder and director of the Organisation for Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP) in the 1980s. She joined active politics in 1994 when she became a Member of Parliament for Makokoba. She held onto her seat until 2000 when she was defeated by the Movement for Democratic Change candidate Thokozani Khupe. She lost again in 2005 to David Coltart but decided to switch to Nkayi North in2008 and won. She has been Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises on-and-off.
