Tendai Biti trial starts today

The trial of Movement for Democratic Change vice-chairperson Tendai Biti who is accused of unlawfully and unofficially announcing the results of the 30 July presidential elections is expected to kick off today.

Biti was arrested on 8 August after he had skipped to Zambia which denied him asylum.

Biti like his boss Nelson Chamisa insist that the opposition leader won the 30 July elections though the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declared Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner.

Chamisa failed to prove his victory at the Constitutional Court and lost the case with costs which are said to run into millions.

He, however, went on to inaugurate himself as the people’s president on 24 October.

Biti’s trial kicks off at the same time the Commission of Inquiry into the Violence of 1 August headed by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe starts hearing evidence from the police and the military.

The hearing will be open to the public.
