The country’s sole fixed telecommunications firm, TelOne has launched a new metro wi-fi internet service which is ’90 percent cheaper than market prices’, an official said.
The service, which is initially targeting Harare but will be rolled out to 60 more sites including Bulawayo, is among other new products that the company launched at its rebranding event yesterday.
TelOne has also launched the Fibre to the Home (FTTH) service targeting to provide internet access to 15 000 households in the capital as well as small and medium enterprises.
“TelOne is marching towards a one-stop-shop for all. The metro wi-fi will be accessible in Harare and roll out is in progress across Zimbabwe and will provide low cost internet access to all with mobile devices,” the company’s managing director, Chipo Mtasa said.
She said the wi-fi facility will initially be accessible at the Mupedzanhamo market in the high density suburb of Mbare, the central business district and the Avenues.
Information communication technology minister, Supa Mandiwanzira, who officiated at the rebranding event, called for cheaper access to internet services.
“If TelOne is able to sell its wi-fi services at 90 percent less, why are we paying all the money we do with other service providers?” he asked.
TelOne, a wholly owned government firm, is joining other players such as Econet, Telecel and NetOne that have been offering similar services.- The Source
