Surprising results from referendum

Despite the apprehension and uncertainty that surrounded the national referendum on Zimbabwe’s new constitution, more than three million people voted for the new constitution and less than 200 000 against it.

The turnout was higher than the March 2008 elections when only 2. 4 million people went to the polls which gave the Movement for Democratic Change its first victory against the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front.

According to results released today 3 079 966 people voted Yes and 179 489 voted No. There were 56 627 spoiled papers.

There were low turnouts in Bulawayo where only 131 151 people voted. In Matebeleland South 142 576 people voted while in Matabeleland North 177 277 people voted.

The highest turnout was in Harare where 517 458 people voted
