Show down expected when Mugabe opens parliament today

President Robert Mugabe is expected to open the third session of the eighth Parliament today amid reports that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change has vowed to heckle and drown the address by the 91-year-old Head of State.

The MDC heckled Mugabe during his State-of –the Nation- Address last month and is reported to have vowed to be more vocal today.

Mugabe’s address will be broadcast live on television and is meant to set the tone for the coming parliamentary year.

According to The Herald the hecklers will be Nelson Chamisa, Gift Chimanikire, Innocent Gonese, Tabitha Khumalo, James Maridadi, Dorcas Sibanda, Fanny Munengami, Prosper Mutseyami, Prince Sibanda, Ronia Bunjira, Zwizwai Murisi and Amos Chibaya.

State security organs are reported to have warned the hecklers that though they enjoy immunity in the House, they are fair game outside Parliament.

“We are aware of the plans by the MDC-T; our duty is to protect the dignity and integrity of the President. More importantly Parliamentarians enjoy immunity inside the building but when they step out they become ordinary people,’’ The Herald quoted a source as saying.
