Sanctions on Mugabe up for review next month

European Union sanctions against President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace are due for review next month. Only one company, Zimbabwe Defence Industries, remains under the sanctions. Britain’s Under- Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs James Duddridge told the House of Commons on Monday that the EU would be reviewing the restrictive measures on Zimbabwe next month but this would not be a British decision but that of all member states. He had been asked by Conservative legislator Stephen Phillips what his assessment of the effectiveness of the sanctions was. “The EU Restrictive Measures have been an important tool in the EU’s efforts to promoting democracy and reform in Zimbabwe,” he responded but did not elaborate. “The EU will be reviewing all Restrictive Measures on Zimbabwe in February 2015. Their future will be a decision for all member states.” Mugabe has been under EU sanctions for more than a decade. The EU removed sanctions on all his lieutenants except him and his wife in February last year. It has also resumed bilateral aid with the government. Mugabe will be turning 91 at the same time.
