Zimbabwe’s referendum on the new constitution will be held on 16 March, Douglas Mwonzora, spokesman for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, said.
Tsvangirai said the elections will be held in July, but gave no date. President Robert Mugabe had said that the elections should be held before 29 June, the day he was sworn in five years ago. While all the major political parties are campaigning for a yes vote in the referendum, the National Constitutional Assembly is asking people to reject it. The country does not have money for both the referendum and the elections but reports say the United Nations Development Programme, which funded the constitutional process, will fund the elections.
