It looks like there is competition among our politicians to obtain doctorates. I have just noted that we now have Dr Joram Gumbo, Dr Tapiwa Mashakada, Dr Obert Mpofu, Dr Phillip Chiyangwa just to name a few. I remember that former deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe was going the same direction a few years ago but I have not heard her being called Dr yet.
I would have thought that with their busy schedules, hoping from one town to another, one village to the capital, one constituency to parliament, our politicians would not find time to study. But it looks like they have plenty of time.
But the country is burning while our politicians are amassing PhDs. This raises a number of questions. How relevant are their degrees to the work situation? Are they working at all, might even be the first question? Are the degrees genuine?
Zimbabwe has the dubious record of being the most literate country in Africa but at the same time one of the worst run countries. Why can’t we turn around our economy with all those brains around?
Are we using our education to develop the country or to shoot each other down? Instead of standing for Doctor of Philosophy, our PhD becomes Pull him/her Down!
I remember there was once a study which said that Zimbabwe was one of the best countries in the world in terms of drawing up plans: five-year development plans, economic recovery plans like ZimAsset and so on, but it was in the bottom four in terms of implementation.
Is this not true up to this day?
