Armed police are reported to have tried to break-up a meeting of Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai with villagers from Nyamakate area in President Robert Mugabe’s home province of Mashonaland West but were foiled by the villagers.

Tsvangirai’s spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka said the police team comprised 9 officers armed with guns and teargas.

The MDC-T leader managed to address the villagers later and told them that next year’s elections provided a unique opportunity for them to end all this.

Tsvangirai had earlier addressed opinion leaders who included 42 village heads, 7 chiefs, 11 church leaders at Zvipani in Hurungwe West.

The villagers told him to be wary of any coalition as it was likely to include ZANU-Pf infiltrators.

They also said ZANU-PF had so far not shown any willingness to have free and fair elections.

Tsvangirai is on a three-day tour of Mashonaland West which began today and ends on Monday.
