People want Tsvangirai to lead coalition- MDC-T says

Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai today met opinion leaders from Goromonzi and it was now clear that people wanted Tsvangirai to lead the coalition that will contest President Robert Mugabe in next year’s elections, his spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka said in a statement.

Zimbabwe’s opposition parties are trying to form alliances to contest the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front but do not seem to agree as there are currently two main coalitions one under the Coalition of Democrats (CODE) and another under the National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA).

Tsvangirai belongs to the NERA coalition but his party insists that he must lead any coalition as he has proved that he can beat ZANU-PF leader Robert Mugabe.

One of the leading contenders, Joice Mujuru of the National People’s Party has said that she is negotiating to join hands with Tsvangirai but was vague on who will lead the coalition.

Tsvangirai’s supporters have warned him against joining ZANU-PF surrogates and feel that joining an alliance with Mujuru could be political suicide.

The MDC-T leader concludes his tour tomorrow with an address of the provincial assembly in Chitungwiza.
