Parliament adjourned indefinitely

Parliament was today adjourned indefinitely after sitting for only an hour, something that Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga said he regretted because it had not passed some of the crucial laws to deal with the coming elections.

The Southern African Development Community at its special meeting on 15 June directed Parliament to debate and pass amendments to the electoral law on 18 June, but the House never discussed the amendments hoping that the principals would clear the field.

They never did.

Parliament’s life official ends on Saturday which means the next Parliament will be formed after the elections whose date is not known at the moment.

There is strong speculation that the Constitutional Court might come up with the date tomorrow.

The dissolution of Parliament means that any amendments will have to be passed by decree, something President Mugabe had already done, but this time he might have to agree with his co-principals.

Nominations for the elections are due tomorrow, so it is not clear what would happen if the elections are postponed say to September or October, the two months both factions of the Movement for Democratic Change prefer.
