Zimbabwe was named by Wedding Ideas magazine, which says it is number one for real weddings, together with Greece and Croatia; Costa Rica; Iceland; Fiji, California and Hong Kong; and Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
The magazine says: “A Zimbabwe safari is the ideal honeymoon for wildlife lovers wishing to get up close and personal with the Big Five. Start off in Hwange – the country’s biggest national park – where you can see lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes.
“Afterwards, head to Victoria Falls, which you can explore with a scenic helicopter ride. You can also go white-water rafting, try zip-lining, explore the Chobe National Park and have a romantic dining experience on board a steam train.”
Zimbabwe has been named one of the leading tourist destinations for 2019 by Lonely Planet and National Geographic Traveller.
It has, however, been experiencing economic turmoil since October when the government announced new fiscal and monetary policies.
Today’s demonstrations were sparked by a 150 percent increase in fuel which came into effect yesterday.
Opinion is, however, divided over the effectiveness of the demonstrations as they turned violent raising fears that if police fail to control the protesters the military might be called in again and might kill people.
The military shot and killed six people on 1 August last year when demonstrations over the delay of election results turned violent.
