Obama says US upholds the same vision for Zimbabwe as its people

United States  President Barack Obama today sent best wishes to the people of Zimbabwe as they marked their 36th independence anniversary and said the United States upholds the same vision for Zimbabwe as its people—“a Zimbabwe that is democratic, prosperous, and provides for its people”.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is, however, not likely to agree as he lamented today that sanctions imposed on Harare by the United States more than a decade ago were taking their toll.

Herald columnist, Manheru, who is believed to be Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba said at the weekend that sanctions had cost the country $66 billion.

Obama last month renewed sanctions on Zimbabwe for another year saying Mugabe was still a threat to United States foreign policy.

United States imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe ostensibly to bring about democracy in the country.

“Over the coming year, we will continue to stand with Zimbabweans in pursuit of our shared goals,” Obama said in a statement by his Secretary of State John Kerry.
