Nearly 5 000 tested for coronavirus in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has tested nearly 5 000 for the coronavirus but it is still a long way from attaining the 40 000 targetted by the end of this month.

The Ministry of Health said 831 people were tested yesterday bringing the total to 4 990.

All were negative which means the number of those positive remains at 28, though the number of those who have died went up to four after 82-year-old mother of Sylvester Nguni died yesterday morning.

She had already been included in the 28 and was case number 27. The ministry said she had been well until 16 April when she developed flu-like illness with chest symptoms.

Her condition deteriorated on 19 April and was taken to hospital in Harare on 20 April but died the following day.

Her son, a former government minister, said his mother was in almost total isolation at her home where she stayed in a self-contained homestead with just two maids and two herders.

The ministry said the other two cases diagnosed recently were those of a 49-year-old man and a 25-year-old man who both returned from the United Kingdom recently.
