My brief encounter with Zimbabwe’s richest man

Twenty-three years ago to this day- 9 May- I received a letter from a Harare law firm that I should retract a story that I had written in March 1991 because it was defamatory.

I had launched The Insider six months earlier and the story was in my third edition. The story was about a tender racket in the then Posts and Telecommunications Corporation.

Towards the end, the story mentioned a company called Retrofit. The company was owned by Strive Masiyiwa, now Zimbabwe’s richest man. I refused to retract the story and went to court.

The case was heard after three years and I won. I will be publishing an ebook about my brief encounter with Zimbabwe’s richest man on Monday.

You might ask, why write the story now, 23 years later? This is fully explained in the 13 000-word article.

The ebook is actually entitled: No regrets- my brief encounter with Zimbabwe’s richest man.

The Insider is a political and business bulletin about Zimbabwe, edited by Charles Rukuni. Founded in 1990, it was a printed 12-page subscription only newsletter until 2003 when Zimbabwe's hyper-inflation made it impossible to continue printing.
