Mwonzora and Mudzuri are both senators with Mudzuri being leader of the opposition in the Senate.
Senate seats are allocated on the proportional representation system and if a candidate is expelled from the party or recalled the seat is filled by a member of the same party and must be the same sex as the expelled member.
Both have been silent since their humiliation at the weekend but their political careers are already hanging by the thread after both were cited as defendants in the Supreme Court case in which the MDC and its leader Nelson Chamisa are appealing against a judgment by Justice Edith Mushore in which she said Chamisa’s leadership of the opposition party was unconstitutional.
It is not clear why Mudzuri was cited as he was one of those affected by the judgment because he and Chamisa were appointed vice-presidents by then party leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Justice Mushore said the appointments were null and void.
Justice Mushore ordered the MDC to hold an extraordinary congress to elect a substantive party leader but said this should be based on the 2014 structures.
At its just ended congress, the MDC passed a resolution saying it had “noted a High Court Judgement ordering the party to hold an extra-ordinary congress and resolved that the necessity and requirements of such extra-ordinary congress have been fully addressed by this congress”.
There is speculation that Mwonzora might team up with Thokozani Khupe of the MDC-T to call an extraordinary congress to elect leadership for the MDC.
