Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi and Youth leader Absolom Sikhosana were saved by President Robert Mugabe yesterday when he nominated them to the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front central committee.
Mumbengegwi and Mzembi were sidelined after being linked to Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s faction but are now back in contention which means that they could retain their cabinet posts.
Mugabe is allowed to nominate 10 central committee members.
Others that he nominated were Deputy Information Minister Supa Mandiwanzira, war collaborators leader Pupurai Togarepi, businessman Guy Georgias, former governor Mudhumeni Chivende, businessman Charles Tawengwa, former politburo member Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, and Josephine Gandiya.
Mugabe is yet to appoint the politburo which will determine who is likely to succeed him.
The new constitution now says the vice-president takes over if the incumbent dies or is incapacitated while in office to complete the term of the incumbent.
The previous constitution left the door open as elections had to be held in 90 days.
