Mugabe used Smith law to intimidate journalists

Four journalists from the Daily News were initially charged under the Law and Order Maintenance Act, a law introduced by the Ian Smith regime, because it provided criminal penalties for publishing false statements.

The four were arrested after the Daily News published a story that said police vehicles were used to assist people looting farms in the Chinhoyi area.

The four were initially charged under the section of the Law and Order Maintenance Act that related to publishing false statements, rumours or reports that are likely to cause fear, alarm or despondency among the public or likely to disturb public peace.

The charges were dropped and the journalists were instead charged with criminal defamation.
