The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front politburo, which is now hand-picked by party leader President Robert Mugabe, will decide the fate of former Secretary for Administration Didymus Mutasa today. Mutasa was sidelined at the party congress last year when he was kicked out of the central committee by his province, Manicaland, but is challenging the legality of the congress. He maintains that he cannot be expelled from ZANU-PF because he belongs to the ZANU-PF prior to congress and not the ZANU-PF after congress. Mutasa also argues that he cannot be kicked out of the party by people who joined the liberations struggle after independence. The provincial executive of Manicaland has already recommended Mutasa’s expulsion from the party. Mugabe, who was on leave until last week, described Mutasa as a stupid fool who cannot be corrected. National Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere said the case of Mutasa was on the agenda for today’s politburo meeting. “Manicaland Province has made its recommendation on Cde Mutasa and it has to do with what he has been doing and what he has been saying and the party is not excited at all and we have said that before and I have said that I don’t see the Politburo coming in the way of what has been recommended by Manicaland. Why would it turn around and say withdraw it?” he was quoted by The Herald as saying. “The party is very straightforward and is very clear, if you cross the line and if you decide to behave in a way that is unbecoming and undermines the party, the party will not just stand and allow it to happen. We have to invoke discipline in the party, so the recommendation from Manicaland like I said, the highest decision-making body, the Politburo, will discuss it.”
