Mugabe to address nation tonight

President Robert Mugabe is to address the nation tonight according to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.

It did not say when but Mugabe is expected to announce his resignation.

He was dismissed as party president today and was given until noon tomorrow to step down as State President.

The mediation team met today to map the way forward, though sources say Mugabe agreed to step down on Thursday but the military which took over the country on Wednesday wanted this to be constitutional so that it would not be viewed as a coup.

His wife, who fled to Namibia, together with senior members of her G40 cabal, Phelekezela Mphoko, Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao and Ignatius Chombo were expelled from the party and banned for life.

Mugabe would pave the way for a smoother transition if he agrees to step down because the party cannot actually recall him.

The only course would be impeachment but this could take days if not weeks.
