Calls for a separate state continue to be raised in Matabeleland. Six years ago, ZAPU-FP leader Paul Siwela said President Robert Mugabe should not to brush off these calls because the people from the region genuinely felt that his government was not serving them. The people of Matabeleland, he argued, had never voted for President Mugabe so he should listen to their concerns instead of brushing them off.
