Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace are “ready to die for what is correct” and have no intention of stepping down in order to legitimise this week’s military coup, his nephew, Patrick Zhuwao, told Reuters today.
It is, however, not clear how he knows this as Zhuwao fled the country and was reportedly interviewed from a secret location in South Africa.
Zhuwao also said Mugabe had hardly slept since the military seized power on Wednesday but his health was otherwise “good”.
Mugabe was pictured fast asleep at yesterday’s graduation ceremony in Harare.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces last night said its operation was on course.
“Contrary to certain media reports which the ZDF believes are being generated by some of the culprits who have been apprehended, the nation is being advised that the operation remains solid and at the same time Zimbabweans are being requested to be patient,” ZDF said.
Thousands of Zimbabweans from all walks of life, including whites who rarely paticipate at public functions, marched in Harare and Bulawayo calling on Mugabe to step down.
