Mugabe, who celebrated his 95th birthday in February, has been ill for some time but his health deteriorated after he was removed from office in November 2017.
The former President who once boasted that he had beaten Jesus Christ because of the number of times he had been reported dead and had resurrected was given two years to leave more than 11 years ago but has outlived most of his contemporaries.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced Mugabe’s death on his twitter handle saying: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe.
“Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
It is not yet clear when and where Mugabe will be buried but he is reported to have said he does not want to be buried at the national Heroes’ Acre especially by the man who ousted him, Mnangagwa.
