Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front leader Robert Mugabe today blamed Movement for Democratic Change secretary-general Tendai Bit, who is also Minister of Finance, for the industrial decay in Bulawayo.
Addressing a rally in Gwanda, the Matebeleland South capital, Mugabe said Zimbabwe got US$500 million under the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights to boost the economy but Biti had not accounted for the money.
“We had said part of the money must be used to resuscitate companies in Bulawayo, but Biti said he would give only US$20 million, which was not enough. The rest of the $500 million, we do not know where it went to,” Mugabe told the rally according to The Herald.
Mugabe said Zimbabweans had been robbed of proper leadership in the last five years because of a dysfunctional government as the MDCs were constantly throwing spanners into State programmes.
“We have moved together with the MDCs and people are now able to judge their performance and personality. You now know ukuthi ngabantu abanjani. Things have been going down and down, especially in Bulawayo.
“People have suffered enough and we want to give them a government that will correct the wrongs done in the last five years.”
Mugabe and his main rival Morgan Tsvangirai were just 120km apart today with Tsvangirai addressing a “star” rally at White City Stadium in Bulawayo.
In the last elections Tsvangirai won more votes in Bulawayo while Mugabe won more votes in Matebeleland South.
