More woes for Cuthbert Dube

The Parliamentary Committee on Health and Child Welfare today said former Premier Services Medical Aid Society chief executive Cuthbert Dube should not just be fired but should be prosecuted for theft or misappropriation of funds. Committee chairperson Ruth Labode said: “The committee notes that the decision of the PSMAS board to retire the CEO with possible benefits is not in the best interest of the public. The committee recommends that he be prosecuted for theft and/or misappropriation of members’ funds.” Dube was fired on Monday evening after revelations that he was earning a salary of US$230 000 a month while the organisation was reeling under a US$38 million debt. His annual salary was enough to pay 613 junior civil servants a year. PSMAS board chairperson Meisie Makeletso Namasasu also stepped down.  According to The Herald, Labode said the committee was concerned that Namasasu was a government employee with the Finance Ministry. She said Namasasu should be investigated and her job reviewed because she had presided over “such immoral salary scales”.
