More than 180 arrested in Zimbabwe for lockdown violations

Some 182 people have been arrested so far for violating regulations on the 21-day lockdown that began on Monday, government spokesman Nick Mangwana said today.

Those arrested will appear in court for initial remand.

“It would be a lie to say the #LockdownZim is easy because it’s not,” Mangwana tweeted.

“Before it went in force there was a lot of push from the citizenry who wanted this because it was seen as the only way to save lives.  Even now we get frustrated calls when poor concordance is witnessed.

“Yesterday we had 19 or so people arrested for different infractions of the regulations.

“Today we had much more arrests with the number of those arrested during this #LockdownZim rising to 182.

“In terms of SI 84 of 2020 criminal courts will open to deal with the initial remands,” he said.

The Ministry of Health said it had tested 274 cases as of yesterday and 266 had tested negative.
