More drama in MDC as Mudzuri asks: How can I be fired by a non-existent party?

One of the former vice-presidents of the Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai, Elias Mudzuri, has dismissed the claim by the MDC-Alliance that he had been expelled from the party.

The MDC Alliance National Standing Committee held a meeting yesterday to discuss the way forward following the recalling of four key officials, Chalton Hwende, Prosper Mutseyami, Thabitha Khumalo and Lillian Timveous, from Parliament by the interim leader of the MDC-T Thokozani Khupe.

Khupe became interim leader after the Supreme Court said Nelson Chamisa’s leadership of the MDC-T was illegal and ordered the party to revert to its 2014 congress structures.

The MDC-Alliance dismissed the recalling of the legislators saying only the MDC Alliance can recall the members.

In a communiqué issued today, the party said: “The MDC Alliance has noted that Morgen Komichi, Douglas Mwonzora and Elias Mudzuri have decided to cooperate with ZANU-PF and the state.

“They therefore have expelled themselves from the MDC Alliance and are forthwith relieved of their positions and membership in the party. They are further withdrawn from all positions to which they had been deployed by the party. Replacements have been made and shall be announced in due course.”

In response, Mudzuri, whose vice-presidency in the party was also ruled illegal, tweeted: “How can I be fired from Parliament by a non – existent political party?

“Ncube (Welshman) fired Tsvangirai (2005) but the party remained Biti (2014) did the same but left the party intact  Today(2020) Sikhala fires us but still the party shall remain  Let’s go for the Extraordinary Congress.”

Ncube and Biti left the party when Morgan Tsvangirai was president.

Studies conducted while Tsvangirai was still alive always indicated that he was more popular than the party and always garnered more votes than all the MDC MPs combined.

Nelson Chamisa won more votes in the 2018 elections than Tsvangirai ever mastered but some argue that this was largely due to the support he got from disgruntled G40 supporters.

Former President Robert Mugabe endorsed Chamisa just before the elections.

One of the G40 masterminds Jonathan Moyo has admitted raising funds for Chamisa’s campaign.

The biggest test for Chamisa, however, is whether the remaining legislators will back him or back Thokozani Khupe to remain in Parliament?

The current legislators have only served 20 of their 60 months term.
