Mnangagwa urges unity, says “we may have been divided at the polls but we are united in our dreams”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa who narrowly beat his main rival Nelson Chamisa of the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance yesterday has thanked Zimbabweans for electing him and urged unity to build a new Zimbabwe for all.

“Thank you Zimbabwe!” he tweeted. “I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe.

“Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams. This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity & love, & together build a new Zimbabwe for all!”

Mnangagwa polled 50.8 percent of the votes to beat 22 other candidates including Chamisa who polled 44.3 percent but Chamisa disputed the results saying though Mnangagwa had won a two-thirds majority in Parliament, he had beaten Mnangagwa in the presidential polls.

Chamisa has been claiming victory even before the vote.

While he persistently complained about the vote being rigged, he did not put machinery to prevent the rigging.

Six people died in the violence that broke out on Wednesday over the polls.
