Mnangagwa to talk about electricity supply with Ramaphosa on Sunday

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today said he will be talking to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa about getting electricity from South Africa on Sunday.

The two leaders are expected to attend the African Union summit in Niger on Sunday.

Mnangagwa, who was in Maputo last month, said he had also talked about the supply of power from Cabora Bassa with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.

Zimbabwe has been experiencing severe power shortages because of low water levels at Kariba which have forced it to scale down power production.

It has also been experiencing problems at Hwange Power station.

Though it normally relies on power imports from South Africa and Mozambique, these had been stopped because of the huge debts it owes to the two countries’ power utility companies.

Zimbabwe paid South Africa’s Eskom US$10 million last week and remains with a debt of US$23 million.

It owes Mozambique US$35 million.
